Status Epilepticus

Status Epilepticus (SE) is a medical emergency characterized by the prolongation of a seizure or a series of seizures without recovery of consciousness in between. If not treated promptly and properly, SE can cause serious physical and mental health issues, including permanent brain damage, and may even be fatal. SE is most common in children and the elderly and can be caused by a variety of medical conditions. However, the most common cause is uncontrolled epilepsy. Treatment is tailored to the individual's specific needs and generally includes the use of anti-epileptic drugs, intravenous fluids and anesthetics. Careful monitoring should be implemented to ensure that the situation is brought under control and further damage is minimized.
