Pan Paniscus

Pan paniscus, commonly known as the bonobo, is a species of great ape found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Central Africa. The bonobo is the closest living relative of humans, sharing 98.7% of their DNA. Bonobos are gradually becoming more well-known for their complex social behaviours and abilities which are considered to be on par with humans. Bonobos have been observed engaging in cooperative problem-solving, using tools, and showing empathy towards their peers. Additionally, bonobos are the only non-human primates to engage in sexual behaviours for multiple purposes such as pleasure, forming relationships, and reducing conflict. As a result, research on bonobos is crucial for understanding the evolutionary roots of human behaviours, and how we interact with our environment.
