Call For Papers
Journal Description: The Journal of Biomaterials is a peer-reviewed, open access forum for high-impact research on the design, synthesis, characterization, and clinical translation of biomaterials. We publish rigorous studies that connect material innovation with biological performance, patient outcomes, and manufacturing feasibility. Our readership includes materials scientists, biomedical engineers, clinicians, and industry leaders focused on healthcare innovation.
Scope and Mission: We seek manuscripts that advance biomaterials science and demonstrate clear biological or clinical relevance. Submissions should present strong experimental design, reproducible methods, and meaningful interpretation. Interdisciplinary work that bridges materials science, biology, and medicine is strongly encouraged.
Core Research Areas: We welcome studies in the following and related topics:
- Biocompatibility, bioactivity, and host response evaluation
- Biodegradable and bioresorbable materials for regenerative medicine
- Tissue engineering scaffolds and microenvironment design
- Hydrogels, polymers, ceramics, and composite biomaterials
- Surface modification, coatings, and functionalization strategies
- Biomimetic materials inspired by natural tissue architecture
- Nanomaterials for diagnostics, imaging, and therapeutic delivery
- Implants, prosthetics, and device materials with long-term stability
- Biofabrication, 3D printing, and advanced manufacturing methods
- Drug delivery systems and controlled release technologies
Clinical and Translational Impact: We value translational research that links material performance to patient outcomes, surgical workflows, and clinical endpoints. Studies that include in vivo validation, preclinical models, or clinically relevant endpoints are prioritized. Manuscripts should clarify how the biomaterial improves safety, efficacy, or usability compared with existing solutions.
Characterization and Methods: Strong submissions detail material synthesis, processing parameters, and analytical methods. Authors should report mechanical properties, degradation profiles, surface chemistry, and biological testing protocols with enough clarity to allow replication. Comparative benchmarking against established materials is encouraged.
Manufacturing and Regulatory Considerations: We encourage studies that address scalability, reproducibility, sterilization, and quality control. Research that discusses regulatory pathways, standards compliance, or manufacturing readiness adds practical value and helps translate biomaterials into clinical practice.
Emerging Topics and Special Interest Areas: We actively welcome submissions that explore next-generation biomaterials and their clinical or industrial impact. Topics of interest include smart and stimuli-responsive materials, immunomodulatory biomaterials, bioactive and antimicrobial coatings, bioelectronics interfaces, and materials for precision medicine. We also encourage manuscripts that integrate biomaterials with gene delivery, cell therapy, or combination therapeutics.
- Stimuli-responsive hydrogels and adaptive biomaterials
- Bioactive surfaces that guide cell behavior and tissue integration
- Antimicrobial and anti-fouling materials for implants and devices
- Bioelectronics and conductive biomaterials for sensing or therapy
- Biomaterials for vascularization, wound healing, and soft tissue repair
- Nanostructured materials for imaging, diagnostics, and targeted delivery
Collaboration and Standards: The journal values collaborative research that brings together materials scientists, clinicians, and industry partners. Submissions that align with international standards for testing, reporting, or validation are encouraged. Clear benchmarking against existing materials or devices strengthens the practical relevance of the work.
Manuscript Types: We publish original research, reviews, short communications, and methods papers that advance biomaterials science.
